August 2016 Newsletter

Infinite Campus Down: August 2
Due to recent Infinite Campus performance issues, the district's Infinite Campus servers will be replaced on the August 2. All of Infinite Campus, including online registration will be unavailable during that time. We apologize for the inconvenience this may create for families and staff.
2016-17 Registration
Registration is REQUIRED for all students. It is imperative that we have current contact information and data for families and students. Additionally, federal Title I funding is dependent on registration and the Household Economic Survey.

IMPORTANT DATES:
September 16: Registration closes for continuing families
September 26: Registrations must be processed for state certified enrollment reporting

SINA / AYP
Reminder: There will be no new SINA statuses for the 2016-17 school year.  Statuses are frozen from 2015-16.  We are expecting the Iowa Department of Education to release Iowa Assessment proficiency for full academic year students this month.
Staff Conducting Research
School Leaders: if you have staff members conducting research in your school for a graduate program, their research proposal must be approved by the district.  Applications for research are located here.
NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
We will be administering the NWEA MAP for the first time this fall.  MAP is a computer adaptive assessment, allowing us to more accurately pinpoint student learning. It is administered three times per year, providing timely growth measures, allowing staff to differentiate and adjust instruction.  For more information about DMPS's administration of the MAP, click here.
We will be releasing a short video explaining MAP for parents in September.
Leaders: Need Help with Data?
If you would like assistance building the data literacy of your staff, the data analysis team is happy to help. We will present personalized content to meet the needs of your school.  Contact Gene Denny for more information.
Visit Us at the Iowa State Fair!
DMPS will have a booth in the East Grandstand at the Iowa State Fair to register returning students for the 2016-17 school year.  We will be handing out mini Frisbees, pocket schedules, and fans featuring our five comprehensive high schools.  Come see us!
Continuous Improvement Updates
  • In June, a cross-functional team came together for four days to review the Academic Planning process using the Kaizen continuous improvement methodology. Learn more in their report out.
  • Do you have teachers that need help organizing their classrooms? The continuous improvement tool, 5S, can help. Teachers who attended TechCon loved it! Watch this short video to learn more.

WAIT. WHAT?
Dear Data Diva, So many things change over the summer.  Has anything important changed in Infinite Campus?   Sincerely, Embracing the Change

Dear Embracing the Change,
I am so glad you asked!  There are some really cool things happening in Infinite Campus.
  1. In an effort to help administrators help teachers and have more meaningful conversations with parents, a new security right has been added to their accounts.  Now when administrators look up a course and go to the sections tab, they have a column called Guest Access.  When they click on the blue Grade Book link, they can view the teacher’s entire gradebook!
  2. We have listened to the request from teachers and other staff members about having a contact log in the Student Information > General area.  Sometime in the next month the current contact log that is housed in the Teacher module will be moved to the Student Information > General area.  This will allow staff members easier access to the information they are discussing without having to go in and out of different modules.
  3. Infinite Campus also added extra support for student who attend multiple buildings.  The new change will remove the need for staff to have access to multiple buildings beyond their own.  This new access will allow staff to see the student attendance, grades, and schedule at the other building.  More details will be sent out on how to use the new features in the next few weeks. This will change how Infinite Campus looks for some staff members.
Sincerely,
Data Diva
