DMPS 20-Year Student Demographic Trends (1.5.2022)
The 2021-22 school year certified enrollment for Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) is 31,024 students. This is a decrease of 1,556 students from the 2001-02 school year and a decrease of 194 students from the 2006-07 school year.
DMPS is much more diverse than it was 20 year ago and continues to be much more diverse than the other public districts in the state of Iowa. The state of Iowa currently has a higher percentage of white students than DMPS had 20 years ago. 1 out of every 5 Black/African American students and 1 out of every 7 Hispanic/Latinx students in the state of Iowa attends DMPS. Additionally, only 13 districts in the state of Iowa, including DMPS, educate more K-12 students in total than the number of English Learner students educated at DMPS.

Quarter 2 Data Literacy Outcomes Rubric Self-Assessment Due Jan 19 (1.3.2022)
The purpose of the Q2 data collection is to inform data literacy professional learning modules that will be available in March 2022. It is our intention that all stakeholders view the Q2 self-assessment as a formative measure. Link to Form for Completion: https://dmschools.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7X97P9h1dopT7hQ
  • Please read this document for further information on how the Q2 data literacy rubric data collection, Q4 data literacy rubric data collection, and data literacy professional development opportunity align and build upon one another. Please reach out to Mary Grinstead with questions or concerns.
As a reminder, all information regarding board goal lever outcome monitoring is posted here: https://data.dmschools.org/monitoring--supports.html (click on the links for level-specific outcome monitoring resources).
Family Relationship Survey (10.6.2021)
DMPS will administer the Panorama Family Relationship Survey to grades PK-12 families from October 18 – November 5 (these dates were changed slightly to better align with conferences). The survey will be sent directly to families from the district on October 18.
Additionally, the Family Relationship survey will be combined with the Emergency Broadband Survey. Families will start with the Emergency Broadband Survey and then will be sent directly to the Panorama Family Survey. The Emergency Broadband Survey consists of three questions for families to indicate their need for internet connection and compatible devices. The results from this survey will determine the amount of funding the district will receive from the Federal Communications Commission Emergency Connectivity Fund. The Panorama Family Survey will focus on parent perception of their students’ school experiences, school environment, engagement barriers and school safety, and will include family background and demographic information. Please read this document in full for more information and for a link to all the survey questions.

2021-22 Assessment, Grading, and Survey Calendar (7.2.2021)
We have compiled assessments, major grading milestones, and surveys into one calendar for the 2021-22 school year.  There are four versions of the calendar: (1) district-wide, (2) elementary, (3) middle school, and (4) high school.  The calendars are also posted at data.dmschools.org.
Embedded in the calendar are two announcements:
  • We are going to utilize the EL & IM end-of-unit assessments as our district interim assessments in 2021-22. With that shift, we will no longer administer the additional EL & IM aligned assessments in the fall, winter, and spring that were serving as universal screeners (what we called the district interim assessments in 2020-21). With this change creating an absence of universal screening, we will be adding reading & math FastBridge screening for all students K-8. Please read more information about this change here.
  • We are administering the Panorama Family Relationship Survey this fall to measure families' attitudes and perceptions about their ties to their children's schools. This survey ties directly to our engagement and community building board goal lever and anti-racist townhall finding #4—that we must do more to lift the voices of community, parents, and students in our decision-making processes. Please read the full announcement here.
Note: this calendar includes abbreviated versions of the grading and district interim assessment calendars. Full grading calendars can be found here: elementary; middle school; high school. Full district interim assessment calendars can be found here: elementary; secondary.
End of Year Data: Board Goal Aligned School Goals & Equity Profiles (6.11.2021)
We have two dashboards ready for use that will be helpful as schools prepare for June board goal quarterly check-ins and start action planning for the 2021-22 school year. Please see below for the links and more details.
Board Goal Aligned School Goals (Link)
Purpose: Answers the question: Are we on track to meet our board aligned goals? The ultimate measure of success and starting point for quarterly check-in conversations between principals and principal supervisors.
Link to Guiding Documentation. This document includes explanations of the measures included in the dashboard and how goals/targets were set. (This document is also linked to the dashboard. You can access it by clicking on the question mark icon.) Note for high schools: COVID Virtual HS student data is merged back into the student’s primary enrollment school.
School Performance and Equity Profile (Link)
Purpose: Answers the question: Is our core healthy in the areas of learning, thriving, and belonging? A holistic, MTSS-focused view of a school, network, or district grade-band. Points to systemic issues that help/hinder the achievement of board-aligned school goals.
Link to Guiding Documentation. This document includes explanations of the measures included in the profile, links to detailed reports for further information/data on measures, and cut points for the color-coded tiers. (This document is also linked to the dashboard. You can access it by clicking on the question mark icon.)
Integrated Collaborative Problem-Solving Process Template with the Title I School-Wide Plan (6.8.2021)
Here is the updated Collaborative Problem-Solving Process template with the Title I School-Wide Plan integrated into the template: Blank Template

You can find additional resources for completing the template on the Collaborative Problem-Solving Process webpage: https://data.dmschools.org/collaborative-problem-solving-process.html . This includes a link to a Canvas course and many supporting documents.
Schools will probably need to copy and paste their current plans into the new template format and then save the new plan in their network folder, located here.
2021-22 Continuous School Improvement Timeline (6.8.2021)
This timeline lays out all events, deadlines, and tasks related to ESSA, Title I, and the Board Goal Quarterly Check-ins. It is also linked at the top of the DMPS School Improvement webpage.
